Ferry Fire Off Madura Island Kills Five; Dozens Missing

Five people died and 41 remain missing after the ferry KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 caught fire on 2 August 2026 near Sumenep, off Madura island. The vessel carried 271 people on the Surabaya–Makassar route. Basarnas, Indonesia's search and rescue agency, leads the ongoing operation. The fire's cause is unknown.
