Nirmal Purja, Record-Setting Mountaineer, Dies in Broad Peak Avalanche

Nirmal Purja, 43, was confirmed dead alongside nine others after an avalanche struck his expedition on Broad Peak, Pakistan, on July 30. His company, Elite Exped, confirmed the deaths. Purja famously climbed all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres in just six months during 2019, and led the first-ever winter summit of K2 — the world's second-highest mountain, notorious for extreme conditions.
