
Nauru Adopts Traditional Name: Republic of Naoero
Nauru's parliament unanimously amended the constitution on 12 May 2026, renaming the country the Republic of Naoero — its name before European colonisation. President Adeang confirmed the change on 30 July 2026, scrapping a planned referendum, saying the identity was already settled. Citizens will be called dei-Naoero, and international bodies have been notified.
