Nauru Changes Its Name Back to Naoero

Nauru's lawmakers voted unanimously on 12 May 2026 to change the country's name to the Republic of Naoero — the name it had before European colonisers arrived. President Adeang made it official on 30 July 2026, skipping a public vote because, he said, the people already see themselves as Naoero. Citizens will now be called dei-Naoero.
