Nauru Renamed Republic of Naoero, Reverting to Traditional Name

Nauru's parliament unanimously passed a constitutional amendment on 12 May 2026 to rename the country the Republic of Naoero, its traditional name before European colonisers altered it. President David Adeang confirmed the change on 30 July 2026, dropping a planned referendum because "Naoero is already the identity of the people." Citizens will now be called dei-Naoero. The government has notified international organisations.
