Federal judge hands light sentence in Brooklyn synagogue car-ramming case

Dan Sohail rammed his car into Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters in Brooklyn on January 28, 2026. On July 29, Judge Eric Vitaliano sentenced him to time served plus seven days, rejecting prosecutors' 14-month request — above sentencing guidelines — calling it "a property crime," not a hate crime. State hate-crime charges had been dropped. He ordered $19,000 restitution and mental health treatment.
