Judge rejects DOJ sentencing push in Brooklyn synagogue car-ramming case

Dan Sohail rammed his car into Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters in Brooklyn on January 28, 2026. On July 29, Judge Eric Vitaliano sentenced him to time served plus seven days, rejecting prosecutors' 14-month request — more than double guidelines — stating: "A property crime is what was charged here. Not a hate crime." State hate-crime charges had been dropped. Vitaliano ordered $19,000 restitution and mandatory mental health treatment.
