Councils that miss amalgamation deadline still face reform

Councils that do not submit amalgamation proposals by 9 August will not avoid the reforms. Local Government Minister Simon Watts confirmed they will go through a separate government "back-stop" process — a fallback option for councils that do not put forward their own plans. Watts said that process has not been finalised and would be shaped by councils already participating.
