Councils skipping amalgamation deadline face unfinished government back-stop process

Councils that do not submit amalgamation proposals by the 9 August deadline will not avoid the reforms. Local Government Minister Simon Watts confirmed they will be routed through a separate government "back stop" process that has not yet been finalised. Watts said final decisions on that option would be informed by councils going through the head-start process.
