Tenancy Tribunal to pilot fast-tracked rent arrears cases

MBIE will run a three-month pilot from August prioritising Tenancy Tribunal cases where a landlord or tenant wants to end a tenancy over rent arrears, alongside severe health and safety claims. Rent arrears drove over 60 percent of tribunal applications last year, RNZ reported, citing OIA documents. Average waits for a first hearing have reached 48 days.
