Tenancy Tribunal to fast-track rent arrears cases in August pilot

MBIE is running a three-month pilot from August that prioritises Tenancy Tribunal cases where a landlord or tenant seeks to end a tenancy over rent arrears, alongside severe health and safety claims. Rent arrears made up over 60 percent of tribunal applications last year, RNZ reported, citing OIA documents. Average first-hearing waits have reached 48 days.
