Dog Control Act update could take effect next year, Watts says

Local Government Minister Simon Watts says an updated Dog Control Act could be in place next year, with recommendations due by late 2026. The March-ordered review may toughen penalties for irresponsible owners and give councils more enforcement powers. ACC logged over 14,000 dog bite and attack claims in 2025. The Act dates to 1996.
