Dog Control Act overhaul targeted for next year, Watts says
Local Government Minister Simon Watts says an updated Dog Control Act could be in place next year, with legislative recommendations due by the end of 2026. The review, ordered in March, may include stronger penalties for irresponsible owners and more powers for council officers. ACC recorded more than 14,000 dog bite and attack claims in 2025. The Act dates to 1996.
