Proposed Bill Would Let Officials Geofence Autonomous Vehicles During Emergencies

Rep. Kevin Mullin (D-Calif.) introduced the AV Emergency Response Coordination Act on July 28 in San Francisco. The bill would let public officials geofence — electronically restrict the operating area of — autonomous vehicles in real time during emergencies. No government level currently holds this power under a standardized federal framework. NHTSA would develop the implementing standards.
