Lewisham first UK council to refuse cooperation with Home Office immigration raids

Green-led Lewisham Council became the first UK local authority to refuse help to Home Office immigration enforcement raids, after a motion passed on 28 January 2026. The pledge applies "wherever legally possible," covering council licensing and environmental health duties. Immigration policy is reserved to Westminster, but enforcement often depends on local authority cooperation.
