Lewisham becomes first council to say no to Home Office immigration raids

Lewisham Council, led by Green councillors, became the first local council in the UK to refuse help to the Home Office with immigration raids. Councillors voted for this on 28 January 2026. The promise applies only where the law allows. Immigration rules are set by the UK government, but raids often need councils' help to go ahead.
