Lewisham becomes first UK council to refuse cooperation with Home Office immigration raids

Lewisham Council, Green-led, became the first UK local authority to refuse assistance to Home Office immigration enforcement raids, after a motion approved on 28 January 2026. The commitment applies "wherever legally possible," covering council licensing and environmental health functions. Immigration policy remains reserved to Westminster, but enforcement often relies on local authority cooperation.
