EU DMA Ruling Forces Google to Open Android AI Assistant Access to Rivals

EU regulators ruled July 16 that Google must give rival AI assistants on Android the same system-level access as Gemini — including wake-word triggers, hardware, and app interactions. Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen announced the decision. Unlike a fine, it mandates operational change. Google retains a safety vetting role over which rivals get deep access. Final binding measures are due by July 27.
