EU DMA Decision Requires Google to Open Android AI Assistant Access to Rivals
The EU announced DMA enforcement requiring Google to give rival AI assistants on Android the same system-level access as Gemini — wake-word triggers, hardware, and app interactions. Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen announced the decision July 16. Unlike a fine, it mandates operational change. Google retains a safety vetting role over which rivals get deep access. Final binding measures are due by July 27.
