British Steel brought into public ownership at over £1m a day

The government took British Steel into public ownership on 16 July 2026, under regulations signed by the Industry Minister. The Scunthorpe plant — the UK's last site making virgin steel from iron ore — costs more than £1 million a day to run its ageing blast furnaces. Ministers said the strategic capability was too important to lose.
