Government takes over British Steel, paying over £1 million a day

The government took over British Steel on 16 July 2026, with rules signed by the Industry Minister. The Scunthorpe plant — Britain's last place making new steel from scratch — costs more than £1 million a day to keep its old furnaces running. Ministers said losing the ability to make steel was too big a risk.
