British Steel nationalised at a cost of more than £1 million a day

The government transferred British Steel into public ownership on 16 July 2026, under regulations signed by the Industry Minister. The Scunthorpe plant — the UK's last source of virgin steel from iron ore — is costing more than £1 million per day to keep its ageing blast furnaces running. Ministers judged the strategic capability too important to lose.
