Government considers NHS support instead of cash for mental health disability claimants

Sir Stephen Timms, leading the review of Personal Independence Payment (the state benefit for disabled people), told MPs the government will not abandon cash support. Yet the review continues examining whether some claimants with mental health conditions might receive NHS treatment or equipment instead. The interim report called the current system "dehumanising" and "not fit for purpose". Final recommendations arrive in autumn 2026.
