Government explores replacing PIP cash with NHS treatment for mental health claimants

Sir Stephen Timms, leading the review of Personal Independence Payment, told MPs the government will not "move away" from cash support for disabled people. Yet the review continues examining whether some claimants—particularly those with mental health conditions—might receive NHS treatment, equipment, or employment support instead. The interim report called the current PIP system "dehumanising" and "not fit for purpose." Final recommendations are due in autumn 2026.
