Plan to abolish gas standing charges for 23 million homes
Standing charges, the fixed daily fee on gas bills, are to be abolished for 23 million homes, Chancellor John Healey said in his first Budget on 28 October 2026. He said two-thirds of households would save an average of £45 a year. The change is part of a package aimed mainly at energy bills.
