Portuguese Police Clear Housing Protest Camps in Lisbon and Porto, Arrest 55
Police cleared housing protest camps at Rossio Square in Lisbon and Dom João I Square in Porto shortly before 6am on 21 October, arresting 55 people. Police said detainees had refused to leave voluntarily. Thousands of protesters returned to both squares hours later. Activists oppose a bill easing evictions and ending rent caps, or limits on rent rises.
