Japan's Nikkei climbed 2.2% to a record high during the day, then fell back to close at 64,999.41, almost unchanged, Reuters reported. In my view, that late-day fade shows buyers losing nerve. It matters because such swings can mean bumpier returns for retirement savers who own stocks.
