ACT targets domestic violence protection gap by criminalising pet abuse

ACT announced a family violence policy on 5 July that treats pet abuse as criminal coercion under the Crimes Act, with up to seven years imprisonment. The move addresses a specific gap: more than half of domestic violence victims delayed leaving because of concern for their animals. The policy gives police power to remove pets to safety when Protection Orders are made.
