National and Labour pledge independent checker for policy costs
National and Labour have promised in their fiscal plans to set up an independent unit to check the cost of election policies, RNZ reported on 12 October 2026. National budgeted $1.2m every three years, Labour $6m a year for an “independent pricing authority”. The aim is to stop arguments about fiscal holes and uncosted promises.
