Alberta premier shifts on pipeline route, easing BC standoff

Premier Danielle Smith reversed course on July 2, accepting a southern route for a new oil pipeline to the Pacific after demanding a northern corridor to BC's coast. The change removes leverage from her negotiating position — the federal tanker ban on BC's North Coast remains in place. The Crown-owned Trans Mountain Corp. and Pembina Pipeline Corp. will develop the project.
