China's new law extends its reach over ethnic Chinese abroad

China's Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress took effect 1 July 2026, claiming authority over Chinese nationals and potentially ethnic Chinese diaspora overseas. New Zealand and other governments are questioning whether Beijing will enforce it across their borders. Taiwan warned the law could apply to Taiwanese citizens.
