Ottawa plans indefinite ban on assisted dying for mental illness alone

Justice Minister Sean Fraser says Ottawa will introduce a bill this fall to block medical assistance in dying — doctor-assisted death — indefinitely when mental illness is the only qualifying condition. He pointed to gaps in mental-health care. Access on that basis is set to begin March 17, 2027.
