Pentagon Cuts Off Anthropic After Phasing Out Claude

The Pentagon has stopped using all Anthropic products, a Defense official told the BBC on 5 October 2026. The cutoff follows a February order to phase out Claude, the company's AI chatbot, which had been used since 2024 for classified work including the Maven Smart System, a military targeting tool. The Pentagon has signed contracts with Google, xAI and OpenAI.
