Czar Samuel's Remains Arrive in Sofia After 1,000 Years

The bones identified as Czar Samuel reached Sofia on Oct. 3, 2026, flown in on a military plane with fighter-jet escort. Samuel, the warrior emperor who died in 1014 fighting Byzantium, the rival empire, drew thousands to a public square. His coffin then moved in procession to the Church of Saint Sofia.
