Algeria advances death-penalty bill for forest arson

Algeria's lower house approved a bill allowing the death penalty for convicted forest arsonists. The bill goes to the Council of the Nation, the upper house, for review. Algeria has paused executions since 1993 under a moratorium, a pause now being tested. The proposal followed northeastern wildfires that killed at least 12 and President Tebboune's September call for tougher penalties.
