Swiss Glaciers Shed 5.5% of Ice in Eight Months
Swiss glaciers lost 5.5% of their ice in the first eight months of 2026, just short of the 2022 record, the annual monitoring report found. Average thickness dropped 2.5 to 4 metres. Led by ETH Zürich glaciologist Matthias Huss, the report warns repeated losses could reset the baseline — the assumed normal — for water and hazard planning.
