Earth Microbe Grows in Simulated Enceladus Ocean at pH 11

An Earth microbe survived conditions like Enceladus's ocean. M. okinawensis, a methane-making microbe from Okinawa Trough vents, grew in lab water mixed with salts, carbonates and powdered rock at pH 11. It turns hydrogen and carbon dioxide into methane. Saturn's moon is 300 miles wide. Findings appeared in Science Advances.
