Council merger decisions pushed to after election

The Government will not decide on council mergers until after the election. RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop and Local Government Minister Simon Watts said Cabinet will look at the 18 Head Start merger proposals in early 2027. Those it backs will be worked up in detail for final sign-off later that year, before the 2028 local elections.
