Government defers council amalgamation decisions until after election

The Government has deferred decisions on council amalgamations until after the election. RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop and Local Government Minister Simon Watts said Cabinet will consider the 18 Head Start proposals in early 2027. Endorsed proposals will go to detailed design for final approval in 2027, ahead of the 2028 local elections.
