Meta appeals extra UK online safety duties for WhatsApp and Instagram

Meta has appealed Ofcom's decision to put WhatsApp and Instagram in a higher-risk tier under Britain's Online Safety Act. Lawyers filed notice in the week before 20 September 2026. The tier requires extra transparency, user controls, scam-ad safeguards and logging of illegal material. Meta says it challenges Ofcom's reading of the rules, not the law.
