Parliament cuts earthquake-prone list by 3,000

Parliament has passed the Earthquake-prone Building Amendment Bill. Building and Construction Minister Simon Watts said nearly 3,000 buildings — about half of those rated earthquake-prone, meaning at higher risk in a quake — will no longer need strengthening work. He said it will save owners and the economy $8.2 billion. The vote was unanimous.
