Parliament removes 3,000 buildings from earthquake-prone rules

Parliament has passed the Earthquake-prone Building Amendment Bill. Building and Construction Minister Simon Watts said nearly 3,000 buildings — about half of those listed as earthquake-prone — will no longer require strengthening. He said the changes will save building owners and the economy $8.2 billion. The vote was unanimous.
