Parliament drops quake rules for 3,000 buildings

Parliament has passed the Earthquake-prone Building Amendment Bill, a law change for buildings at risk in quakes. Building and Construction Minister Simon Watts said nearly 3,000 buildings — about half on the at-risk list — will no longer need safety upgrades. He said it will save owners and the economy $8.2 billion. All MPs voted for it.
