Trump dismisses proposed Canada-EU associate membership

Donald Trump called “laughable” the idea of Canada becoming the European Union’s first associate member — a formal partner short of full membership. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen raised it Sept. 16. Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the ambition in a Sept. 17 speech to the European Parliament, saying details still need work.
