Oxfordshire village's symbolic vote to leave UK over asylum housing

Piddington, Oxfordshire, voted 285 to 26, with one spoiled ballot, to declare independence from the UK in an unofficial, non-binding referendum Tuesday. The 312-vote result, announced Wednesday outside the village hall, protests plans to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers — people seeking protection — at a converted Defence Ministry site in nearby Bicester.
