Oxfordshire village votes symbolically to leave UK over asylum housing plan

Piddington, Oxfordshire, voted 285 to 26 with one spoiled ballot to declare independence from the UK in an unofficial symbolic referendum on Tuesday. The 312-vote poll, announced Wednesday outside the village hall, protests plans to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at a converted Ministry of Defence site in nearby Bicester.
