124 Land Defenders Killed in 2025, Led by Colombia

At least 124 land and environmental defenders were killed worldwide in 2025, one every three days, Global Witness reported 16 September 2026. Latin America saw 85% of deaths, with Colombia recording 39, the highest total. Nearly three-quarters were Indigenous people and small-scale farmers. Since 2012, the group has counted 2,375 such killings worldwide.
