124 People Killed Protecting Land and Nature in 2025

At least 124 people murdered worldwide in 2025 for protecting land and nature — one every three days — the group Global Witness reported 16 September 2026. Latin America had 85% of deaths, with Colombia highest at 39. Almost three in four victims were Indigenous communities and small farmers. The worldwide total since 2012 is 2,375.
