124 land defenders killed worldwide in 2025

At least 124 land and environmental defenders were killed worldwide in 2025 — one every three days — Global Witness reported 16 September 2026. Latin America accounted for 85% of deaths, led by Colombia with 39. Almost three-quarters of victims were Indigenous people and small-scale farmers. The cumulative toll since 2012 reached 2,375.
