Australia's pre-1788 Indigenous population put at 2.2 million

Australia was home to about 2.2 million Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people before the First Fleet arrived in 1788, researchers estimate, compared with early estimates of 250,000. The modelling comes from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures, published in Nature Human Behaviour.
